One of the oldest and holiest of places for Christians worldwide, the Church of The Holy Sepulchre is without doubt packed with symbols of ancient Christianity, with strong meaning for the worlds Christian population. Housed in the old walled city of Jerusalem, a place of worship has been housed on this site since the third century.
The sites within the church are marked with special meaning to devout Christians worldwide. Among them are some of Christianity’s most meaningful and symbolic sites:
Calvary: A staircase marks this site, which is the most lavishly decorated in the entire church. The main altar is said to carry the Rock of Calvary, which can be seen through a glass protective cover. And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull. Matthew 27:33
The Chapel of The Nailing of The Cross: on the hill of Golgotha (the Calvary) , this small chapel is off to the side of the main altar housing the Rock of Calvary.
The Stone of The Anointing: Said to be the place that Christ’s body was prepared for burial after being taken from the cross, this stone holds particular meaning for many people, and brings peace to those seeking solitude in their lives.
The Angels Stone: Housed in the Aedicule, this stone is said to be a fragment of the stone that sealed Christ’s tomb after his burial. This area is shared by three of the Christian churches that are housed within the Holy Sepulchre Church.
Prison of Christ: Traditionalists believe that this is the area where Christ was held during his imprisonment.
There are many other poignant and meaningful areas and items within the Church of The Holy Sepulchre, and we will explore those items in a future newsletter, as well as expand upon the items above.
It is amazing how much meaning these items and places hold in the hearts of many Christians, but what is even more amazing is the reaction of many Christians when they first enter the church and feel the awe inspiring peace that radiates from this home of Christianity.
